Long Vowel
Long vowels in Katakana are indicated by adding the mark "ー" regardless of the proceeding vowel, while long vowels in Hiragana are expressed by adding あ, い or う(sometimes え or お is used) according to the proceeding vowel;
| column | mark that is added | example |
|---|---|---|
| all columns | ー | カード(card) |
| kaado | ||
| キー(key) | ||
| kii | ||
| スーツ(suit) | ||
| suutsu | ||
| ケーキ(cake) | ||
| keeki | ||
| コート(coat) | ||
| kooto |
The mark is written horizontally when the word or sentence is written horizontally, while the mark is vertically ("|") when the word or sentence is written horizontally.
